The St. George Tennis Academy, located in the heart of “color country” in southern Utah, is surrounded by red hills and cliffs and is only 30 minutes from Zion National Park.

The tennis facility also is an hour and a half from Las Vegas and is centered within a two-hour drive of five spectacular national parks, including the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Capital Reef.

The St. George Tennis Academy sports eight lighted hard courts, post-tension and concrete in construction, as well as a practice wall and center stadium court. All were built in 2000.

The SGTA teaches more than 145 junior players, making it one of the largest junior programs in the USTA Intermountain Section. The academy taught 11 of the 18 boys who were Utah state high school champions and runners-up this year.

SGTA features a staff of five tennis professionals. Owner and Director Dave Smith recently was named “Top Seminar Speaker” at both the 2002 USPTA California and Intermountain division conventions for his discussion on the use of the two-handed forehand.

Dave and Bruce Smith, his father and fellow coach, combined for a national record of 768 team league match wins and only eight losses over a 21-year period at La Quinta High School in Westminster, Calif.

They established this record from 1969 to 1991, where the two Smiths led teams to a total of three California Interscholastic Federation titles, three runner-up titles and 10 semi-final appearances.
