David Smith
David W. Smith is the director of tennis at the St. George Tennis Academy at Tonaquint Tennis Center in St. George, Utah.

He previously served as the head tennis professional at the Green Valley Spa and Tennis Resort in St. George for three years.

Dave has taught more than 3,000 players in his 27-year teaching career. He currently teaches approximately 100 junior players, including Utah’s top 18-year old girls’ singles player, Jessica Watts, and the No. 2-ranked 14-year-old boy in Utah, A.J. Bartlett.

Dave grew up under the tutelage of his father, the late Bruce Smith, whom the National Association of Coaches recognized as the 1983 California Coach of the Year and runner-up for National Coach of the Year. Dave is a product of the tennis-rich area of Southern California, where he competed regularly with many of the world’s top players.

After high school, where he set most every school tennis record, Dave went on to play No. 1 singles for Rancho Santiago Community College and California State University, Fullerton, while gaining a bachelor’s degree in physical education and science.

Following college, Dave joined his father at LaQuinta High School in the Huntington Beach area of Southern California, where the two Smiths led that school’s tennis program to over 700 league match wins and only eight losses.

In 1991, Dave moved with his wife to Phoenix, Ariz., and served as the assistant tennis professional at the five-star rated Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park.

He has been married for 15 years to Dr. Kerri Smith, a pediatrician in St. George. Dave and Kerri have one daughter, Kyla, who is 3 ½ years old.

This multi-talented tennis pro is an avid writer. He has written features for USPTA’s ADDvantage magazine, and is a contributing editor and feature writer for www.tennisone.com. He has had more than 50 articles published over the past four years. He also is in the finishing stages of his first book, “Tennis Mastery,” due out in early 2003.

In addition, Dave plays bass guitar and is a semi-professional magician. His hobbies include mountain biking in the spectacular areas around southern Utah and reading all types of books.
